Recruitment and Hiring

Recruitment and HiringEvery college and university has its own channels for advertising student opportunities. Post internship positions on your school’s student employment listings or on bulletin boards in departments where you might recruit appropriate talent. Some campuses have student internship offices where you can list opportunities. Survey campus websites, newsletters, magazines, newspapers and other publications for appropriate places to advertise. Ask student environmental groups to help get the word out.

Tell professors who may be interested in your project work to spread the word. If you have a list of campus contacts, send out an announcement about your new internship program. Even though you are targeting students for recruitment, you can simultaneously get the word out that you are breaking new ground at your institution. By spreading the word about your internship program, you might find interested parties for future projects. Research your institution’s hiring policies, especially for short-term positions such as internships.

Be open to taking interns from other schools and even students who have recently graduated. Some of the best interns recruited by the Harvard Green Campus Initiative have been recent graduates of other colleges and universities. Recent graduates are particularly ideal because they would be most likely to be in a position to continue the project and grow into a new role if the opportunity arises.
