A study in green: The future? It's not plastics. The bright idea for college dorms is a style that's eco-friendly.

Going off to college used to require little more than packing a couple of suitcases. These days, it's an excuse for a buying binge. The alternative? Going green. "You have to sit back and think, 'How much is really necessary?' " says Philip Kreycik, coordinator of Harvard University's undergraduate Resource Efficiency Program, which promotes sustainable living in the school's dorms. "The bottom line is, as much as you can simplify, that's the best way to go."

University testing new diesel exhaust filter: Captures 80 percent of toxins

Breathe easy. This summer, Harvard became the sole university test site for a new Canadian-made exhaust filter that soaks up the fine soot, hydrocarbons, and odors that normally puff out of diesel engines.

Harvard's Leith Sharp: "You Can Green Your Campus"

Building Design & Construction's Interview with Leith Sharp: In 1998, Leith Sharp was named Young Australian of the Year, New South Wales Environment Category, for her work in establishing the Environmental Management Program at the University of New South Wales. Two years later, she established the Harvard Green Campus Initiative, which encompasses 600 buildings and 21 million gsf of floor space.
