Harvard Receives Top Green Rating in Princeton Review
Harvard's environmental sustainability efforts have once again placed the school in the top rankings of the Princeton Review. Only eleven colleges received the top Green Rating of 99 this year, and areas such as transportation, purchasing, teaching, and green building were considered.

Harvard Museum of Natural History Hosts Fall Lecture Series

Harvard Receives Highest Grade from the Sustainable Endowments Institute
In its annual Sustainability Report Card, the Sustainable Endowments Institute ranked Harvard among the top fifteen most environmentally sustainable colleges and universities in the country. Harvard received the highest grade of A-, and the Green Campus Initiative was mentioned as the administrative force behind Harvard's sustainability work. Some of the other areas of consideration in the report card include approaches to food and recycing, student involvement, green building, and transportation. See Harvard's full report card

Harvard Assesses Wind Power with Study
Harvard continues to move forward with the exploration of alternative energy sources, and a new study will allow the university to see if wind power can meet some of Harvard's energy needs. With the recent installation of a 164-ft meteorological tower (MET) and wind meters (anemometers), the university plans to collect data over the next 12-18 months in order to assess if (and where) wind turbines would be effective energy producers on campus. Medical School's Sustainable Dining Program Wins Award
The Harvard Medical School sustainable dining program was awarded "Best Menu" by Food Management magazine recently. Two of the features noted in the article were compostable food containers and consistent use of local produce. (more...)

Kennedy School's Summer Picnic Goes Green
The Harvard Kennedy School's Green Team created new sustainability guidelines for their annual summer picnic this July. With the goal of "zero-waste," the picnic goers ate and drank out of compostable or recyclable dishware, and the event raised awareness about the need for "efficiency and innovation" in order to minimize impact on the environment. Harvard Commits to 30% Reduction of Greenhouse Gases by 2016
On July 8, President Faust issued a statement on the new report by the Harvard Greenhouse Gas Task Force. In her statement, she announced intention to proceed with several recommendations from the Task Force. Among others, these include: the pursuit of a comprehensive program to reduce Harvard's emissions, with a primary emphasis on Harvard's own operations; a short-term goal of a 30% reduction of emissions below 2006 levels by 2016; the establishment of administration and staff support to meet the goals; and commitment to sustainability teaching and research to generate knowledge that can benefit the rest of the world.

Harvard Earns Top Ranks in Green Report Card
Harvard earns an A-, the highest grade earned in 2008, on the Sustainable Endowments Institute's Green Report Card. The other 5 recipients are Dartmouth, the University of Washington, Middlebury, Carleton College and the University of Vermont. HGCI Director Leith Sharp was quoted in a related Forbes Magazine article on "America's Greenest Colleges."

Harvard Green Cleaning Chapter Released
HGCI staffer Dara Olmsted and Jason Luke, Associate Director at Facilities Maintenance Operations, wrote up Harvard's Green Cleaning Program for "The Green Campus," a recently published book edited by Walter Simpson of SUNY Buffalo.

The Earth Wins: FAS Environmental Competition 2008
From November to March, occupants and managers of 13 buildings in FAS competed in areas like recycling and energy use reduction. The energy savings from the event lightened the FAS bottom line by $72,472! (more...)

New LEED certified buildings at Harvard
Four buildings recently achieved LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC): Aldrich Hall, Wyss Hall, and Hamilton Hall at the Harvard Business School, and 5 Cowperthwaite Street in Cambridge. (more...)

Reusable Shipping Containers Pilot with Office Max!
As part of OfficeMax's commitment to the environment, beginning on January 4th, portions of orders will be shipped in a reusable shipping container in place of a cardboard box. This initiative is being piloted by OfficeMax at Harvard University with support from the Harvard Strategic Procurement Office and endorsement by the Harvard Green Campus Initiative. (more...)
